- Aluminum sulfate is used for surface water treatment, which leads to waste sludge being disposed into water bodies, causing environmental pollution. Coagulants’ regeneration from sludge improves water quality and reuse options. Organics accumulation is the primary concern regarding coagulant regeneration, using acidification.
- How is aluminum sulfate made?
- The coagulants are extracted from inorganic minerals, such as kaolinite (Hirsch 1960). The conditions used to manufacture aluminum sulfate include elevated temperature, pressure, and a highly oxidative environment because the concentrated sulfuric acid used to dissolve the coagulant destroys and degrades any organic matter (Hosseini et al. 2011).
- How does sulfuric acid affect aluminum sludge extraction?
- As the sulfuric acid demand varies because of acid-consuming materials, including organic compounds, hydroxides, carbonates, and bicarbonates (Keeley et al. 2014), these materials compete with the aluminum hydroxide and consume the sulfuric acid, allowing only limited aluminum extraction from the sludge (Fouad et al. 2018).
- How does water coagulation affect aluminum concentration in sludge?
- Choosing the optimum dose for raw water and the efficiency of flocculation and coagulation processes positively affect the aluminum concentration in sludge. Inefficient water/coagulant mixing will cause the percentage of dissolved aluminum to be higher and lower in wasted sludge and vice versa.
